In establishing EarlyBirds, it arose as an inspiration by bringing together experiences, passion, and services with the goal to deliver better value to society. Both Kris and his co-founder, Jeff Penrose, have similar experiences as far as starting their career in the public sector and living and working in different countries. They work closely together, and both understand that they have to combine their experiences and passion while truly understanding what they want to deliver and what value they can offer.

EarlyBirds Cofounder and CEO Kris Poria has been recognised among the 10 most inspiring business leaders making a difference in 2021 by CIO Views magazine. According to his interview with the CIO Views, Kris arose from obscurity, despite being simply the son of a farmer in India and his parents having no education. At the age of 16 he started attending an English school where for the first three months he did not understand anything. This was one of the first things that make Kris realize that through challenges come opportunities.

Kris later became interested in software and software development when he noticed many people getting interested in working overseas in different countries. So in the middle of the 1990s, he sold his business to obtain his second education and got certified as Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer. He got a job and began working in various big cities in India, then Europe, the US, until he finally decided to settle down in Australia.

The idea for EarlyBirds came when Kris was working for a large systems integrator. He had identified that one challenge in the market was that some of the big customers could not access or engage with startups and scaleups that had innovative solutions.

One of the key principles EarlyBirds uses is that failing fast can result into faster learning and improving. The company is always looking at what they are delivering to the customer and if they are meeting customer expectations.

One of the things that make the company unique is that despite having competition, they do not really focus on competition. They continue to focus on how they can solve their customers' challenges and help them change and evolve new thinking. They help customers on an ongoing basis on how to do their job better and be more productive and therefore, adjust their solutions to better assist customers and everybody involved in the business ecosystem.

EarlyBirds focuses on the insights they are gaining based on challenges their customers have and are continually working on understanding that and pivoting as required to improve their customers’ businesses.

The EarlyBirds open innovation ecosystem is expected to play an important role in the development of business applications of new technology, such as quantum computing. This is because it offers a B2B platform where businesses can find innovators or developers of disruptive technologies. In addition, SMEs are participating as consultants to help businesses and innovators work together for the benefit of all participants.

The EarlyBirds open innovation ecosystem is also composed of the Explorer and Challenger programs. The Explorer program delivers innovation to the whole organisation as a service and has several features: a nominated SME for the business; a platform enterprise license; regular engagement to help stimulate innovation in the organisation; quarterly and monthly innovation days; and a focus on certain innovations. The Challenger program is for people who want to focus on one specific challenge for the organisation.
